Karl Baker has been handed a half-season contract by Torquay manager Martin Ling.

Baker, 22, is a former Dawlish, Tiverton and Stoke Gabriel midfielder and has earned his chance after training with the Gulls for several weeks.

"I've given Karl a deal until January," Ling told the Western Morning News.

"He's definitely got something, which I think quite a lot of people around Devon have known for a while, and I want to give him the chance to see what he can really do with extended full-time training."

Several other clubs are believed to have been tracking Baker, who first played for United's centre of excellence before the club's former youth scheme was closed eight years ago.
