Gareth Ainsworth's debut as permanent Wycombe manager might have ended in cruel fashion, but he insists he can add some much-needed stability to the relegated-threatened club.

Bobby Grant's deflected shot in injury-time handed Rochdale all three points at Adams Park, adding to an earlier effort from Ashley Grimes. Sandwiched between the visitor's goals was an effort from Joel Grant for the hosts but it counted for nothing, although Ainsworth is predicting better times are ahead for the Chairboys.

"We definitely didn't deserve to lose," he said. "In fact I think we might have edged it on chances and we could have won. I said to the boys if they play like that for the rest of the season then we'll be nowhere near the bottom two and that's the most important thing.

"We were dealt a cruel blow in injury time but that happens and its up to me now to get them picked up for next week. The stability was a bit of an issue even though there was a caretaker manager in. I've been in that situation and until some is the official manager it is always difficult to realise what's happening so the stability has definitely helped.

"I will change some things, I think we need to be fitter and stronger and my regime will be tougher training under me but hopefully we'll reap the rewards."

Rochdale took the lead after just five minutes as Grimes scored his fourth goal of the season, turning home debutant Terry Gornell's cut back.

But Wycombe were level 20 minutes later as Joel Grant linked up well with Dennis Oli before chipping the onrushing Josh Lillis. However, just as the game looked to be settling for a draw Bobby Grant's speculative effort on 92 minutes took a huge deflection and looped in to steal Rochdale the win.

"I feel for Wycombe to be honest because when you're scrapping for your lives and trying to get wins things like that seem to go against you," Rochdale boss John Coleman said.

"We started well but we didn't capitalise on that. But give Wycombe their due, they took the game to us after that. Fair play to them because they pressed us back and I think they were the better team in the first half but in the second half we were a lot better and in the end we probably deserved to win."
