York defender Clarke Carlisle has joined fellow League Two side Northampton on loan until the January transfer window.

The 33-year-old centre-half, who made 18 appearances for Northampton while on loan there last season, is expected to make his second debut for them in Tuesday night's home game with Morecambe.

"I'm absolutely delighted to have Clarke back on board," said Northampton manager Aidy Boothroyd.

"He was a huge part of the squad that stayed up last season. I'm really pleased he has agreed to come here and to help us build on the good work we started last season and have carried on so far this season."

Carisle, the chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association, joined York on a short-term deal in the summer following his release from Burnley and made a total of 14 appearances for the Minstermen.
