Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth was left beaming after his side moved closer to npower League Two safety with a vital 1-0 win at Morecambe.

Stuart Lewis scored his second goal of the season to give Ainsworth's side the victory that took them past the 50 point mark for the season to almost certainly ensure survival. He said: "It was a huge win for us after the defeat on Saturday and although we are not mathematically safe I think I will finally be able to sleep.

"We have been looking for three points for a while now and after losing in the last minute against Accrington on Saturday we needed to bounce back and we did just that.

"It was a great performance from the lads against a side who have lost only once here in six months. The conditions were difficult but we showed an unbelievable togetherness all over the park to fight for the win. Stuart Lewis doesn't score too many but he picked a great time to pop up and score and I am absolutely delighted.''

Morecambe boss Jim Bentley said his side's performance was the worst he had seen since taking over and apologised to the home fans.

He said: "I'm shell shocked to be honest because we were terrible. It was definitely the worst performance I have seen since I took over and I feel really flat. It was an awful game of football full stop and I feel sorry for the fans that came to the game and will say sorry to them for what they saw.

"The conditions were poor and the pitch was an absolute killer for us as we couldn't play the football we wanted. Because of that we had to show a bit more guile to try and create an opening but we didn't do anything and we have to be much better than that.

"The game was always likely to be won or lost on a set piece and that is how it proved and I want much more from my lads because even though we have 52 points we are not mathematically safe and need to show far more desire and creativity than we did today.''

Lewis was the man who sparked the vital win for Gareth Ainsworth's side as he lashed home a shot from 12 yards out in the 55th minute after the Morecambe defence had failed to clear their lines after Matt Spring's deep free kick was headed into the danger area.

Morecambe hit back with Ryan Williams hitting the post and forcing young keeper Matt Ingram into a decent save but with Dave Winfield and Gary Doherty outstanding they kept Morecambe at bay all too easily.
