Tuesday 26th November

Just six days after sacking manager Brian Laws, Scunthorpe United surged into the Sky Bet League 2 Play-Off places with a thumping 4-0 win at nine-man Rochdale.

Caretaker boss Russ Wilcox has claimed he is "capable" of doing the job on a permanent basis and backed up his statement with a second consecutive win, following Saturday's 2-1 success over Portsmouth.

Defender Niall Canavan scored five minutes before half-time and the remaining goals came in the final quarter-hour with Dale at a numerical disadvantage.

Oliver Lancashire (69) and Jack O'Connell (74) were sent off, the latter's dismissal allowing Sam Winnall to make it 2-0 from the spot, and Jimmy Spencer and David Syers added to the home side's misery.

The Iron accounted for almost a quarter of the evening's goals on an otherwise low-scoring round of matches in the division.

Accrington Stanley and third-placed Southend United were the only other sides to score more than once, the latter inflicting another 2-1 loss on Pompey despite substitute Cauley Woodrow being sent off five minutes after his introduction.

Andy Barcham's early opener was a distant memory by full-time as Will Atkinson (76) and Barry Corr (82) swung the game Southend's way.

The result took the Shrimpers ahead of Rochdale and within a point of Oxford United and Chesterfield, with the leading pair involved in goalless draws against Newport County and bottom club Northampton Town respectively.

Stanley beat fifth-placed Fleetwood Town 2-0 thanks to substitute Danny Webber, with a 75th-minute penalty, and Kayode Odejayi seven minutes later.

Burton Albion remain seventh after a 1-0 win over Mansfield Town, Billy Kee with the goal 12 minutes from time.

At the bottom, Torquay United remain just a point ahead of Northampton after a 1-1 draw with local rivals Plymouth Argyle. Elliot Benyon gave the Gulls a sixth-minute lead but Plymouth equalised three minutes later through Reuben Reid's penalty.

Bristol Rovers and York City occupy the two places above the drop zone after also sharing 0-0 stalemates, Rovers against Cheltenham Town and York at Morecambe.

Bury won 1-0 at home to Hartlepool United, Daniel Nardiello with the goal in the 48th minute.

Rhys Murphy's goal earned Dagenham and Redbridge a 1-1 draw at AFC Wimbledon, who had led through Michael Smith.

Wycombe Wanderers and Exeter City shared the same scoreline, Steven Craig giving Wanderers an early lead which was cancelled out late on by Alan Gow.
