Scunthorpe United striker Deon Burton has been named the Sky Bet League 2 Player of the Month for December.

Burton's positioning and opportunism were apparent last month, as four goals in as many games thrust Scunthorpe into title contention.

Scunthorpe United manager Russ Wilcox said: "I am delighted for Deon Burton to be picking up this accolade.

"This individual award represents how well the team have done during December.

"His overall performances, not just his goals, have helped us to top spot in Sky Bet League 2."

Sky Sports' Football League pundit Don Goodman said: "Burton's ability to hold up the ball and bring team-mates into the game has been just as effective as his goalscoring in December.

"He seems to be benefitting from Russ Wilcox's more refined style of play and has repaid his manager with a sterling month."

Sky Bet Head of Football Paul Wiggins said: "The veteran striker has really hit form during December scoring four goals in the month as Scunthorpe went unbeaten at an important time of the season.

"If Burton keeps chipping in with vital goals, like the opener away to Oxford, then The Iron will be in the hunt for the Sky Bet League 2 title come the end of the season."
