Scunthorpe United have secured automatic promotion to Sky Bet League 1 despite a 2-0 loss at Exeter City.

The Iron, who suffered their first defeat in 29 games, were five points clear of fourth-placed Fleetwood Town heading into the weekend's matches and knew a victory would take them up.

Despite suffering their first loss under boss Russ Wilcox, they return to the second tier at the first attempt after relegation last term as the Cod Army could only muster a draw against Southend United.

Scunthorpe now sit second in the table, one point behind leaders Rochdale - who went above them after winning 2-0 at home to Cheltenham Town - with one match to go.
