Carling Cup 2008

All eyes are on London this weekend when the new Wembley plays host to the Carling Cup Final for the first time as Chelsea take on Tottenham Hotspur.

It is the second all London final in consecutive seasons after Jose Mourinho's Chelsea side beat Arsenal 2-1 last year.

Both Avram Grant and Juande Ramos are searching for their first title in English football but for Chelsea this is their third League Cup final in four years while for Spurs it is their first visit to Wembley since 2002, when they lost out to Blackburn.

Grant took over at Stamford Bridge in September with some very big shoes to fill. Jose Mourinho won every domestic trophy possible during his three years in the capital, with two Premiership titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup twice and if that isn't enough pressure for Grant Chelsea have never lost in a League Cup final.

The Blues have reached the final on four previous occasions, the first time back in1965, when a goalless draw with Leicester was followed by a 3-2 win in the replay.

Spurs have reached the final on five previous occasions winning three and losing two, the last victory coming back in 1999 when a 90th minute strike from Allan Nielsen gave them a 1-0 win over Leicester.

Juande Ramos arrived at White Hart Lane after two superbly successful seasons at Seville, where he picked up no less than five trophies including the UEFA Cup twice and after a difficult start, Spurs have now made it through to the final 16 of the UEFA Cup, the final of the League Cup and are up to 11th in the Premier League table.

HEAD TO HEAD
The two sides have met three times in the League Cup, the last meeting coming in the Semi Final back in the 2001/02 season.

Chelsea won the first leg at Stamford Bridge 2-1 thanks to a brace from Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink but a second leg drubbing at White Hart Lane put pay to their chances of winning the competition.

Goals from Iversen, Sherwood, Sheringham, Davies and Rebrov game the home side a 5-1 win on the night and a 6-3 aggregate scoreline, before they went on to lose the final against Blackburn.

Chelsea have a slight edge in the competition, having progressed on the previous two occasions that the sides have met, although both history and form count for nothing in a cup final!
