Arsenal were favourites to win the 1988 final game but Luton shocked the Gunners with a goal after just 13 minutes, from Brian Stein, and managed to hold Arsenal off for much of the game.

Arsenal turned it around in the space of three minutes with goals from Alan Smith and Martin Hayes. The turning point came when Andy Dibble, stand-in goalkeeper for Les Sealey, turned Nigel Winterburn's penalty round the post to keep Luton in the game.

With seven minutes remaining Danny Wilson claimed the equaliser and, in the 90th minute, Stein scored his second to send the Luton fans into apoplexy.
