David Gregory was told Colchester United would be building a new stadium when he signed for them in…1995.
Thirteen years later the club has finally made the move - while Gregory has hung up his boots and works in the media department.
The U's have left Layer Road after 98 years and will begin the new season at the 10,000 all-seater Weston Homes Community Stadium.
Gregory was a midfielder when he left Peterborough to play for the Essex outfit.
He spent seven years at the club, and has now returned as PR and Communications Officer.
Gregory said: "I'd done some commentating for BBC Radio Essex during my playing days with the U's, and decided I'd like to get involved in the media.
"But when I joined the club in 1995 and was promised I'd be involved in a move to a new ground I never dreamed that this is how things would pan out.
"When I heard the job was available I threw in my CV and was delighted to get the job.
"Then we were clearing out our offices at Layer Road over the summer, and we found board meeting minutes from back in the Seventies.
"Even then they were talking about a new ground - so it is great that the move has finally happened. And at least I am here to see it happen."
Colchester play in League 1 this term and Gregory is relishing his role of ensuring they are ready for the kick-off.
He added: "We have so much to organise but I'm loving it. We will make sure that Colchester's media department is up there with the best."
The U's first home game is against Huddersfield on August 16.
Gregory said: "Fans have been shown around their new home, and they can't believe how good it looks.
"It is a dream come true for the people of Colchester. We hope to improve our fortunes on the pitch and get back into the Coca-Cola Championship."
