30.01.2012 Late Kick Off tonight

What's on the show in your local area?

Don't forget it's Late Kick Off tonight (Monday) on BBC One at 11.05pm. The regional Football League magazine programme covers a wide-range of issues each week that matter to every supporter of the Football League. This week's highlights include...

Late Kick Off features a special report on English football's great academy revolution. What will the introduction of the Elite Player Performance Plan mean to the clubs in the region, and is it a force for good or bad?

Late Kick Off followed him on matchday as Brentford beat Wycombe 5-2 and learned about some of the unorthodox methods he's employed to conquer his fear of footballing failure.

Midlands:
Late Kick Off speaks to Nottingham Forest chairman Frank Clark, who says it would be "horrendous" if the club went down but thinks they can stay up and push for promotion next season. He says he is disappointed that three of their first choice back four have been allowed to get into the last year of their contract and he wants to make sure a wage structure is restored at the club. He also says that he is acutely aware that the future of the club is at stake.

North East & Cumbria:
Late Kick Off meets Carlisle United's USA international Frank Simek. Frank struggled to settle when he first came to English football and was eventually released by Arsenal. Now he's living the American dream and a spot of English heritage in Cumbria.

North West:
Late Kick Off reports from both ends of the John Coleman story. The show is at Spotland to see how the new Rochdale manager fares in his first game in charge and to quiz chairman Chris Dunphy on why Coleman was the man. Sarah Mulkerrins, meanwhile, is at Accrington to see how Stanley will cope without their long-time boss. Coleman will also be a studio guest.

26.01.2012 Chopra wins top Asian Football Award

Michael Chopra has been crowned Player of the Year at the inaugural Asian Football Awards at Wembley Stadium

By Zohaib Rashid

Michael Chopra was crowned Player of the Year at the inaugural Asian Football Awards at Wembley Stadium last night.

The Ipswich Town striker picked up his award in front of a sold-out crowd which included a number of individuals and organisations from the Asian community who have are making a mark in football. Chopra beat Barnet defender Anwar Uddin to the top prize. There were a number of other winners with Football League links.

Sheffield Wednesday defender Danny Batth, on-loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, was named as the winner of the Young Player of the Year award by the PFA's Simone Pound and Pakistan international footballer Kashif Siddiqi. Batth was not able to pick up the award in person as he was busy helping The Owls complete 3-1 victory away to League One strugglers Scunthorpe United.

Watford commercial manager Raj Atwal picked up the award for Football behind the scenes (administration) while Manish Bhasin, presenter of the BBC's Football League Show, took home the Football Media Award.

The AFA were launched to recognise the contribution to both the professional game and grassroots initiatives by individuals and groups across the UK with South Asian heritage. The FA and Kick It Out along with charity Sporting Equals were amongst the supporters of the initiative.

FA chairman David Bernstein, who spoke to kick start the awards, said: "I'm absolutely delighted to welcome the Asian Football Awards and extended guests to Wembley Stadium. I can't think of a better back drop to these inaugural awards than Wembley. Tonight is an important to showcase role models within the Asian football community who can inspire younger generations."

Kashif Siddiqi, a former apprentice at Boston United before embarking a career in America, said: "Tonight was a great example of the massive strides that the Asian community have made in football. Though there is a lot of work to do, the awards should serve as inspiration for more Asians to make their mark in football, both on and off the playing field."

26.01.2012 This weekend's TV game

We take a look at the forthcoming televised action in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy

There is only game involving Football League teams live on TV this week which is an exciting Johnstone's Paint Trophy showdown that will see the winners earn a place at Wembley in the final.

On Monday night the cameras will descend upon Boundary Park for the second leg of the Northern Area Final as Oldham Athletic play host to Chesterfield.

The Spireites currently lead 2-1 after an important victory at the b2net Stadium. Scott Boden opened the scoring for the home side after converting a James Hurst cross before Robbie Simpson's spectacular equaliser for Oldham.

But then Danny Whitaker struck a penalty for Chesterfield to give his side the edge over their fellow npower League 1 club.

Oldham manager Paul Dickov has been calling on fans to make home advantage count ahead of the game which could make it even more intimidating for a Chesterfield side that has lost nine out of a possible 14 on their travels this season.

The last time these clubs met at Boundary Park was back in November in a very one-sided affair which saw Oldham romp to a 5-2 win. Robbie Simpson was in impressive form and scored a 21-minute hat-trick as Athletic went on to crush the visitors.

But bottom of the table Chesterfield will go into the game with real confidence as they are undefeated in their last three matches, not to mention the string sense of self-belief as a result the first leg win.

It's obvious to say that both sets of players, coaching staff and fans will not want to miss out on a trip to Wembley and will certainly give it their all in what could be a very exciting and pulsating cup tie.

19.01.2012 This weekend's TV game

We take a look at the forthcoming televised action in the npower Championship and npower League 1

This week live on TV sees a delightful double of Football League action from both the npower Championship and League 1.

First up on Saturday evening is an interesting npower League 1 showdown between Huddersfield Town and Brentford, with a 5.20pm kick-off at the Galpharm Stadium. Huddersfield have been in good form this season and will be hoping they can take all the points to help them in their promotion push.

Town will certainly be looking upwards as they currently sit in third place, three points behind Sheffield United and seven behind leaders Charlton Athletic. But it could also be a case of looking over their shoulder as three teams below them in Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons and Stevenage all have games in hand.

That being said Huddersfield have lost just once in front of their fans this season out of 13 games. Goals have clearly not been a problem for Town who have bagged an impressive total of 52 in their 26 matches this campaign, a tally that has no doubt been heavily contributed by hotshot striker Jordan Rhodes.

The future of the 21-year-old forward has contributed 25 strikes already this season making him the subject of major speculation as many top clubs are rumoured to harbour an interest. And he will be the real danger man for visiting Brentford who have proved tough opposition for many a home side this season.

The Bees have lost just twice on the road and have conceded just 12. Solid performances have helped Brentford to eighth in the table giving manager Uwe Rosler some hope of achieving a Play-Off position at the end of the campaign.

But recent form hasn't been the most fruitful as the Bees are without a win in six league games. This isn't as negative as it sounds as five of these ended in a draw which shows Huddersfield could be in for a tough game at Galpharm Stadium.

The other game live on TV is a Monday night npower Championship encounter at St Marys' as Southampton play host to Leicester City.

The Saints currently sit top of the league but have seen their lead cut down to just goal difference after struggling to find some form over the Christmas period. The south coast club has picked up just eight points out of a possible 18 which has opened the door for the chasing pack.

Unfortunately for Nigel Adkins' men they welcome a Leicester side well fancied for promotion this term. But the Saints will be looking for revenge after a 3-2 defeat at the King Power Stadium earlier in the season.

Confidence will be high for both teams after each club enjoyed big wins in their last game, with Southampton seeing off Nottingham Forest 3-0 last Saturday in the Championship, and City overcoming the same opponents in the FA Cup on Tuesday night with a 4-0 victory on home soil.

The Foxes, managed by former Saints boss Nigel Pearson have won just three league games on the road this campaign, picking up 14 out of a possible 36 points away from home, as they currently trail the Play-Off positions by seven points.

19.01.2012 Powell named Young Player of the Month

Crewe starlet wins award

Crewe Alexandra's Nick Powell has been named the December Young Player of the Month for the npower Football League.

The highly rated 17-year-old attacking midfielder netted twice for the Railwaymen last month to take his end of year tally to six goals.

Having risen through the ranks at Crewe, Powell began playing in Under-18 football aged just 15 and went on to make his first team debut for the Alex against Cheltenham Town in August 2010.

A regular feature in England Youth Sides, he was part of the England U16 side that won the Victory Shield in 2009/10 and was also a member of the U17 squad that travelled to the 2011 World Cup in Mexico.

In receiving the award, Nick said: "It is a great achievement to win this Award. I was on the bench a lot of last season and to have played well throughout October, November and December is superb.

"I'm hoping to add a lot more goals to my game, hopefully above 12 this season, by getting into the box much more.

"The Award will either go on the mantelpiece in the front room or with my other trophies, but hopefully it'll be where my family can see it."

Crewe Director of Football, Dario Gradi MBE added: "Nick has come on significantly over the last six weeks. He was great during the Wimbledon game, scored a fantastic goal and has continued with mature performances since then.

"Nick has always been a skillful player with good technique, but it's one thing to have a bag of tricks and it's something else to know how to get results which he does.

"I can't bracket him like Seth Johnson, Danny Murphy or David Platt. He's quite different and hard to compare with others. He likes to run with the ball, he's clever, has tricks and encourages being whacked.

"In football you either stop goals, score goals or makes goals; he does all of those."

Each season, Football League clubs invest more than £40m on identifying, training and educating the next generation of football talent. Around a third of this money (£12.6m) is provided by the Football Association and Premier League. There are 8,500 young players registered with League clubs making Football League Youth Development the largest centrally co-ordinated young player programme in world football.

Head of Youth Development at The Football League, David Wetherall said: "Nick is developing fantastically well at Crewe and is undoubtedly a rising star in the game.

"He has great experience for a player of his age and I look forward to watching his career progress in the coming seasons."

Each month, the Young Player of the Month Award is awarded by The Football League to the young player who has made the most significant contribution and impact in first team football. To be eligible the player must be either under 21 years of age or be playing in the season during which he turns 21.

During the 2010/11 season, 249 players aged 21 or under made their professional debuts in The Football League.

  • M1 Southbound will remain open all the way down to M1 junction 19 (A14 off slip) to permit access to M1 junction 20 for local traffic
  • Traffic failing to leave the M1 Southbound will have to leave the motorway at M1 junction 19 and then either join the A14 Eastbound or M6 Westbound

M6 Southbound

  • M6 traffic destined for the M1 Southbound will be signposted off at M6 junction 2 using A46/A45/M45 to M1 junction 17
  • The M6 will remain open all the way up to M1 junction 19 (A14 off slip) for A14 Eastbound and local traffic

02.01.2012 Gary Ablett passes away

The Football League is saddened to learn of the death of Gary Ablett at the age of 46 after an 18-month battle against non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

The Football League is saddened to learn of the death of Gary Ablett at the age of 46.

Ablett, the only player to win the FA Cup with both Liverpool and Everton, passed away on New Year's Day after an 18-month battle against non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

The Liverpool-born defender began his career for his home town club in 1985 and went on to make nearly 150 appearances for the Reds. He also spent loan spells with Derby County and Hull City early on in his time at Anfield.

After a nine-year spell he made the short move across Merseyside to sign for rivals Everton. At the end of his time with the Toffees he had a brief loan spell at Sheffield United before making a permanent switch to Birmingham City in 1996.

The left sided defender spent three years at St Andrews, including a brief loan stint with Wycombe Wanderers, before he signed for his final English club, Blackpool in 2000.

After 10 appearances for the Tangerines he moved to America and finished his playing career with Long Island Rough Riders, finally hanging up his boots in 2001 after over 400 career appearances.

A return to Everton saw him spent the next four years working in their Academy before he made the reverse trip to Liverpool to take over the coaching of the club's reserve side. In May 2009 he was appointed as the manager of Stockport County but couldn't prevent the Hatters, who were in administration at the time, from being relegated to League 2.

He left after 13 months in charge at Edgeley Park but was soon back in the dug out after he agreed to join the coaching staff at Ipswich Town in the summer of 2010. It was just a month into his new job working with the Tractor Boys when he was diagnosed with the blood cancer.

Everyone connected with The Football League would like to express its deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

29.12.2011 This weekend's TV games

We take a look at the forthcoming televised action in the npower Championship and League 1

Even though there are just a few days left of 2011 teams from up and down The Football League will not be taking the foot of the gas as they try to end the year in style.

And there is a festive feast of action live on TV which will serve as the perfect tonic for the New Year celebrations.

First up on Saturday lunchtime is the 12.15pm kick off at King Power Stadium as Leicester City play host to Portsmouth. The npower Championship showdown comes just over a month since they played the first league fixture at Fratton Park which ended in a 1-1 draw.

David Norris put Portsmouth ahead with a deflected strike in the 68th minute, but former Pompey striker David Nugent levelled matters six minutes later with an impressive 20-yard shot to share the points.

Since then things have become a little difficult for both sides. Leicester have slipped down the table picking up just six points from their last six games with Portsmouth only marginally better with an eight points return.

But the alarm bells won't be ringing too loudly for City manager Nigel Pearson who has lost just two out of the seven games he has been in charge since taking the helm in mid November. His side currently sit just five points off the Play-Offs - something that can be easily rectified with a decent string of results.

Pearson has also built an impressive unbeaten home record which has stretched four matches with notable wins over Crystal Palace and Blackpool. This is something Portsmouth will be keen to put to the test as Pompey have struggled on the road so far this season.

Seven defeats, three draws and just one win on their travels is no record to boast about and will need to improve if Portsmouth are to climb the table away from the relegation zone. That being said manager Michael Appleton has seen his side develop a six point gap above the bottom three something he will be keen to extend as his side once again become the visitors.

The other game live on TV on Saturday is an evening London derby action as Leyton Orient opens their doors to the Matchroom Stadium for npower League 1 league leaders Charlton Athletic.

With only a seven mile trip over the River Thames, Charlton fans won't have too many excuses for being late for the 5.20pm kick off and will be hoping their team can pick up an impressive 10th away win of the campaign.

The Addicks currently sit top of the tree with a seven point lead, despite drawing two out of their last three matches. And with exactly half of the games now already played you could forgive any Charlton fans of dreaming of a return to the npower Championship.

Anyone watching football on TV does like to see a few goals and Charlton certainly haven't faltered in that department. The Addicks have bagged 47 goals already this season making them the joint top scorers in The Football League with Championship outfit Southampton.

Orient on the other hand have shipped 33 in total, 18 of which came at the Matchroom Stadium which could leave boss Russell Slade rethink his strategy. But two wins from their last three games will give the O's a confidence boost going into a game where they are real underdogs.

Last season Charlton ran out comfortable 3-1 winners both home and away games which will be something Orient will be keen to improve upon this time round.

22.12.2011 This weekend's TV games

We take a look at the forthcoming televised action in the npower Championship and League 2

Live on TV this weekend is a Boxing Day bonanza of Football League action showcasing both the npower Championship and npower League 2. What better way than to beat the Christmas blues than watching two mouth-watering showdowns?

First up on Monday afternoon is an all npower League 2 affair which sees newly promoted AFC Wimbledon play host to promotion chasing Oxford United. The 12.15pm kick off at the Cherry Red Records Stadium is an important game for the Dons as they've managed just three points in their last six games.

Boss Terry Brown will certainly not be happy at his side's exploits in recent weeks as he remains without a league win since 8th October. The Wombles have really gone cold turkey on three points lately which has seen them slip down the table in worrying fashion.

Oxford on the other hand currently sit just outside the Play-Offs and will be confident that they can do enough against a team they have never lost to. But with AFC Wimbledon's relatively new existence, the history books are far from extensive, so the clubs have only met twice before.

In 2009/10 both sides locked horns in the Blue Square Premier with United running out winners in both games. A tight 1-0 away victory at the start of the season was followed up by a solid 2-0 win at home for Oxford giving them a 100% record.

But things could be a little different this season as United are struggling for form themselves - picking up just seven points from a possible 18. Manager Chris Wilder will be buoyed by the recent win over struggling Northampton Town and goalless draw with fellow promotion hopefuls Morecambe.

Next up on Monday is an interesting matchup between Birmingham City and West Ham United. The 5.30pm kick off will see two sides dreaming of a quick return to the top flight do battle for an important three points over a very busy Christmas period.

As all Football League fans know a good return during the festive period can make all the difference when it comes to the business end of the season in May. This is even more important for West Ham who continue to chase down league leaders Southampton in the race for automatic promotion.

The Hammers sit just one point behind the Saints who have been in faltering form in recent weeks. So boss Sam Allardyce will be keen to keep the pressure on in a potentially difficult game at St Andrews.

City are yet to lose at home this season winning six and drawing three making it a big ask for the visitors. That being said the Hammers have fared better on the road this season losing just twice out of 11 games - the most recent being a comprehensive 3-0 defeat at the hands of Reading.

Looking at the history books things a little one sided since the clubs first met in 1919, with Birmingham on 40 wins, 20 draws and 32 defeats. Last season saw them both battle it out in the Premier League which obviously didn't end too well for both sides as they were relegated to the npower Championship.

Interestingly they met four times last campaign with the Blues drawing 2-2 at St Andrews, winning 1-0 at the Boleyn Ground and also coming through a two-legged Carling Cup tie 4-3 on aggregate - a run that ended in ultimate glory for the midlands club as they lifted the trophy at Wembley in the final.

Whatever the result on Monday, it is guaranteed to be a real Christmas cracker so make sure you tune in.

16.12.2011 Shelvey named Young Player of the Month

Jonjo Shelvey has been named the November Young Player of the Month for the npower Football League

Jonjo Shelvey has been named the November Young Player of the Month for the npower Football League.

The 19-year-old scored four times in five games for Blackpool before being recalled by his parent club Liverpool to replace the injured Lucas Leiva.

On-loan at Blackpool since September, Shelvey's November haul included a hat-trick at Elland Road as part of the Seasiders' 5-0 demolition of Leeds United. Another notch at Middlesbrough took his loan tally to six goals in ten appearances.

With Liverpool since April 2010, the midfielder is a product of the Charlton Athletic youth system. Before switching to Merseyside, Shelvey made 49 appearances for the Addicks and in 2008 became their youngest player aged 16 years and 59 days.

Shelvey has represented England at U16, U17, U19 and U21 levels.

In receiving the award, Jonjo said: "When I was told I was Young Player of the Month I got straight on the phone to my mum, dad and girlfriend. It is a great honour for me and my family, the trophy will be staying with me in Liverpool on my mantelpiece.

"When you're not playing at Liverpool it gets you down, you sometimes need to go away and play games. I think going out on loan has helped me get my confidence back up. I think I'm showing that in training back here.

"Blackpool is a great club to play for and the attacking way they played suited me down to the ground. It was easy in that respect. The gaffer Ian Holloway said just play your normal game - he put his trust in me."

Blackpool manager, Ian Holloway added: "He was fantastic - he had a lot of frustration when he first came, I think he is an entertainer, I think he has all sorts of talent and will never lose that.

"Hopefully he will get the chance to use that and shine because he really suited us. The boy is good enough to play anywhere and in our system floating in off the right he was dynamic.

"He has gone a long way to giving us some confidence and making us realise we can win some games. I hope his career goes form strength to strength."

Head of Youth Development at The Football League, David Wetherall said: "Jonjo had a very positive impact during his short stay at Blackpool, scoring crucial goals and gaining vital match experience.

"He is undoubtedly a huge talent and another example of the quality of footballer being produced at Football League clubs. I wish him the best of luck with the rest of his career."

15.12.2011 This weekend's TV games

We take a look at the forthcoming televised action in the npower Championship and League 1

Live on TV this weekend is a triple whammy of Football League action that will leave most football fans watering at the mouth.

Kicking it off at 5.20pm on Saturday evening is an interesting encounter between npower League 1 sides MK Dons and Preston North End. The match at stadium:mk offers a showdown between two teams in very different runs of form.

The Dons currently sit third in the table and appear to have an automatic place in their sights as they're only three points behind second-placed Sheffield Wednesday with a far superior goal difference. Manager Karl Robinson will hope his side can continue their unbeaten home run this season which has lasted an impressive 10 games.

The home side have also won the last five games on the bounce which will undoubtedly breathe even more confidence into a team that has scored 23 times at home this campaign.

On the other hand Preston come into the match on the back of a run that has seen the Lilywhites pick up only one win in their last 11 games. It is this poor run that spelt the end for manager Phil Brown after only eleven months at the helm.

Despite an encouraging start to the campaign, form began to wane which ultimately led to the former Hull boss to be dispatched by new club Chairman Peter Ridsdale. But it does give caretaker managers Graham Alexander and David Unsworth an opportunity to impress if they can get the right result.

It isn't all doom and gloom for Preston fans as their team still have realistic hopes of making the Play-Offs, sitting just five points out of the coveted places. A nice three points could be just what is needed for a team that has really struggled in recent weeks.

Next up on Sunday is a 1pm kick off in the npower Championship which is destined to be a hotly contested affair. Fratton Park is an intimidating place for any visiting teams but throw in the fierce rivalry between the two sides it's certain to be cranked up a few notches.

The last time these clubs locked heads was a very one sided FA Cup match in February 2010 where Pompey ran out 4-1 winners at St Mary's - something Southampton will be keen to put right this time around.

The history books also show a one sided record but this certainly favours the Saints who have won 19 games, drawn eight and lost only nine against their rivals. And manager Nigel Adkins will be looking for any kind of confidence boost as his side have won just once in their last four games.

Defeats to lowly Bristol City and Doncaster Rovers plus a dramatic draw with Blackpool, courtesy of equaliser three minutes into injury from striker Ricky Lambert, have seen their commanding lead cut to just three points. It means the Saints need to start finding their form quickly if they are to stay ahead of West Ham United who sit second in the table.

But Portsmouth will be no easy game as Pompey have lost only once in their last six outings - picking up solid wins over Nottingham Forest, Coventry City and Burnley. They have also only lost twice in front of their fans this season, winning six and drawing two.

Last up is Monday night's npower Championship encounter between two teams that also harbour promotion hopes this season. A 7.45pm kick off at Selhurst Park sees Crystal Palace play host to Birmingham City which will be the 47th time they have met since January 1915.

Birmingham just edge it in the history books with 19 wins, 10 draws and 17 defeats and recent results show how tight the games have been. You have to go back to 1989 for the last time either side won by more than two goals which shows this could be another close encounter.

Fast forward to the present and Palace are still not the most prolific scorers at home. This season they have notched just nine goals at home but have proved to be a tough nut to crack for any visiting attackers. Three wins, six draws and just one defeat shows that Birmingham may have it all to do if they want go home with the three points.

The Blues have two games in hand on most teams in the Championship and will be keen to maximise them to help improve their current league position of 13th. Birmingham will be hoping the three days' rest from their European exploits against Malmo on Thursday will be enough to recuperate for a further domestic challenge.

Boss Chris Hughton has seen his side pick up just eight points out of a possible 18 which could be seen as the ill-fated hangover from the extra games.

14.11.2011 League pays tribute to Alan Keen MP

Chair of All Party Parliamentary Group on Football dies, aged 73

The Football League is saddened to hear of the passing of Alan Keen MP, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Football.

Having worked within the game as a scout at Middlesbrough, Keen had an unrivalled understanding of the game and, after entering Parliament, continued to be great advocate for football in particular during his time on the Culture Media and Sport Select Committee.

In tribute, Football League Chairman, Greg Clarke said: "Alan was a true football fan, his hard work and understanding of the game will always be remembered. He was a strong voice for football in Westminster and a dedicated local Member of Parliament.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time."

Alan Keen worked as a scout for 18 years at Middlesbrough including time under Jackie Charlton when he was credited with helping spot Graeme Souness and bring him to the club.

First elected to Parliament in 1992 he served as Member of Parliament for Feltham and Heston where he worked alongside his wife Ann Keen who was an MP until 2010.

As well as being chair of the All Party Football Group Alan was also chair of the athletics All Party Group.

He is survived by his wife Ann, two sons and a daughter.

11.11.2011 Kee named Young Player of the Month

Burton Albion striker wins award

Burton Albion's Billy Kee has been named the October Young Player of the Month for the npower Football League.

The 20-year old netted five times in four npower League 2 starts last month, including the winner against Bristol Rovers and a hat-trick in Burton's 6-3 victory at Barnet. A further goal against Macclesfield Town in November took his tally for the season to eight.

The Northern Ireland U21 international signed for the Brewers from Torquay United in August 2011 having started his career at Leicester City where he scored 46 times in 43 appearances for the academy and reserve sides.

In receiving the award, Billy said: "It is very nice to win this award, I really didn't expect it - it's the best trophy of this type that I've won.

"I've settled in really well here. All of the lads have made me feel at home, I'm surrounded by my family and a good gaffer - I've never been so happy playing football."

Burton Albion manager, Paul Peschisolido, added: "Billy scored against us for Torquay and Accrington. He was a thorn in our side against us so it's nice to have him in yellow and black.

"He's been an absolute bargain, he's a great all-rounder who's scoring a lot of goals and creates them too.

"Billy's had an opportunity here to play and he's proved that if he gets a run of games he can be prolific. He has the quality to play at a much higher level."

Head of Youth Development at The Football League, David Wetherall said: "Billy demonstrated excellent goal scoring ability last month.

"His performances have been influential in keeping Burton around the League 2 Play-Off places and I look forward to following the rest of his career."

21.10.2011 Curbishley and Gallacher back Official Soccer Schools

Alan Curbishley and Kirsty Gallacher helped launch Official Soccer Schools this week at Brentford

Alan Curbishley and Kirsty Gallacher have thrown their support behind The Football League's Official Soccer Schools website in association with Beko Mum's United.

The former Charlton Athletic Manager and Sky Sports News presenter ran a coaching session at Brentford's Griffin Park to launch the website which helps mums and dads find and book Soccer Schools at their local League club.

Year 3 at Mount Carmel School were shown a number of drills by the duo and Brentford community coaches including dribbling, passing and penalty taking.

Serving 17 participating Football League clubs, OfficialSoccerSchools.co.uk further markets the Soccer Schools and multi-activity courses run by fully FA qualified coaches at Football League community schemes.

Kirsty Gallacher, is backing Beko Mums United following a nationwide survey of mums that revealed that 68% wanted to get more involved in their child's sporting activities.

Beko Mums United spoke to 900 mums about family time and found that 90% of Mums agreed that outdoor sports helped their child develop their communication and teambuilding skills.

This desire to get more involved in their child's sport has really played a huge role in the look, feel and content of the Facebook page. Over a fifth of Mums were interested in learning more about football jargon, and over a third were interested in getting ideas on nutritional tips for their children.

Take a look at the courses on offer at your club by visiting www.OfficialSoccerSchools.co.uk.

15.10.2011 Kick It Out Weeks of Action kick-off

The 2011/12 Kick It Out Weeks of Action begin this weekend

Kick It Out's One Game, One Community weeks of action is here, and the game's biggest names, from star players to governing bodies and community figures, are pledging their support.

England's pioneering coach, Hope Powell, said: "The Football Association, like Kick It Out, is committed to football for all, and inclusion across all areas of our game. The weeks of action is a great way of spreading that message across the country."

Greg Clarke, Chairman of The Football League said: "The One Game One Community week of action is a fantastic opportunity for The Football League, our clubs and our fans to come together to show that discrimination of any form will not be tolerated within our game.

"Kick It Out have led the way in tacking racism and diversity issues within football for many years. I am proud that Football League clubs are doing all they can to support the excellent work of the campaign."

The Premier League's Richard Scudamore echoed this and praised the campaign's role in the strides made across the game: "Working in partnership with Kick It Out, there has been a lot of progress in making football more inclusive.

"Both we, and the clubs, want fans from all backgrounds to attend, feel welcome and engaged in the Premier League; this is reflected in the fact that 11% of attending fans at matches are black and minority ethnic and more women and children are attending than ever before."

Remaining one of the most highly visible community and social inclusion campaigns in the world, the period will see grass roots football join the professional game, as well as teams and leagues across the continent, for a united stand against any discrimination taking root within the sport.

As ever, the League Managers' Association is giving its support. Richard Bevan said: "Kick It Out's work which looks at increasing the level of coaches and managers from black and ethnic minority candidates at all levels of the game is something we promote all year round. The weeks of action initiative is vitally important as the game shows its support for the campaign's work at both professional and grass roots level."

Gordon Taylor, head of the players union, stressed the importance of player support to the campaign: "The PFA is the world's leading sport union and consists of footballers from a wide range of backgrounds, creeds and faiths.

"Professional players are role models the world over and it is of utmost importance they learn the value of diversity. The One Game, One Community weeks of action give them an opportunity to demonstrate support and respect for their fellow players."

Throughout the 18-day period, professional clubs will be making their own contribution by holding matchday events at their dedicated One Game, One Community weeks of action fixture, with a horde of teams already confirming the activity they will be undertaking. At grass roots level, a number of thought leadership seminars, football tournaments and fan and community led activity will take place.

Seasoned campaigner, Rio Ferdinand, is back as weeks of action ambassador. His support remains unstinting: "For many years, I have been a proud ambassador for Kick It Out. Since the campaign's existence, it has helped improve the game in this country. The initiative champions different cultures that exist throughout the English leagues, something which has made all communities feel welcome at football stadiums."

Bristol City's Albert Adomah said: "The phrase One Game, One Community is about football bringing people together, irrespective of race, religion or background. It's about unity."

In League 1, Sheffield United's Johnny Ertl said: "Football is the perfect platform for the Kick It Out campaign. It's all about togetherness, solidarity and it doesn't matter where you come from or what colour your skin is, we are all the same and everyone deserves respect."
